Stroke clubs
Stroke Clubs are local groups for those affected by stroke, including stroke survivors and carers. They aim to provide
a regular meeting place for people to come together and share their experiences as well as opportunities to take part in a
programme of activities. (see stroke clubs)
Devon and Cornwall
Barnstaple Stroke Support Group Meets: Thursdays 2-4pm in the Community
Room, Medard House, Bevan Road. This social group organises visiting speakers, entertainment and trips out. Refreshments
are provided at meetings.
Bodmin - One Step Further Stroke Club Meets: every other Tuesday 2-4pm at
Athelstan House in Priory Road. This small but sociable group enjoy trips out and occasionally teams up with the One Step
Further Stroke Club in St Austell.
Camborne and Redruth Stroke Club Meets: the second Thursday of each month 7-10pm at Penworthy
Hall, Illogen, Redruth for a social evening.
Dartmouth Stroke Support Group Meets: alternate Thursdays 2-3:30pm in the
Over Sixties Rest Room, Charles Street. This small social group enjoys the occasional outing.
Exeter and District Stroke Club Meets: every other Tuesday 7:30-9pm
in the Community Room, Vranch House School, Pinhoe Road. A social evening with the occasional guest speaker. We enjoy trips
out particularly in the summer months and try to arrange a holiday for our members each year.
Exmouth and District Stroke Club Meets: the first and third Tuesdays
of each month 2:15-4:15pm. The club organises guest speakers and entertainment. Trips out are organised throughout the
year.
Falmouth and District Stroke Club Meets: the first and third Friday of each
month 1:30-3:30pm at St Mary's Church Hall, Kimberley Place. We enjoy many activities with visiting speakers and entertainment
and trips out throughout the year
Ilfracombe Stroke Support Group Meets: the second Monday of each month 2:30-4:30pm
at the Salvation Army Hall, Torrs Park Road. As well as having open membership, people who have had a stroke are referred
to this group following rehabilitation at the local Community Hospital.
Liskeard and District Stroke Club - Stepping Stones Meets: alternate Tuesdays
2-4pm at the Coronation Centre. We enjoy doing many crafts and we also invite guest speakers.
Plymouth Stroke Activity Club Meets: Wednesdays every other week 12:30-2:30pm
at the Tamar View Community Cente, Poole Park Road. The club was set up for younger stroke people and organises a
wide range of activities, speakers and entertainment.
St. Austell - One Stop Further Stroke Club Meets: alternate Fridays 2-4pm
at the Cuddran WI Hall, Holmbush. We enjoy various activities, craft work and the occasional trip out. We also often team
up with the Bodmin group.
Sidmouth Stroke Club Meets: the second Tuesday of each month 2:30-4:30pm
at Trumps Court, East Street. We are a small group who enjoy a social get together and the occasional trip
out.
Tavistock Stroke Group Meets: the first Thursday of each month from 10am-12pm
at the Anchorage. We organise guest speakers and entertainment, and enjoy trips out, particularly over Christmas.
Teignmouth and Dawlish Stroke Club Meets: the first and third Monday of
each month 2-4:30pm at the Alice Cross Centre, St James Precinct. The club provides transport by minibus and has a
recreational therapist. They also enjoy a social afternoon.
Torridgeside Stroke Club - Bideford Meets: Wednesdays 2-4pm in the Community
Room, Ethelwynne Brown Close. We start our afternoon with games and then have visiting speakers and entertainment.
We also have a number of trips out which often include visits to the theatre in Barnstaple. The club celebrated its 21st
birthday on 2 May 2007.
Non-affiliated clubs and support groups
There are a number of stroke support groups in Devon and Cornwall that are not affiliated to The Stroke Association. These
are located at Bideford Hospital, Exeter Young Stroke (New Faces), Helston, Holsworthy Hospital, Plymouth (Venton Centre),
Saltash and Torbay Hospital.
Gloucestershire and Somerset
Bath Stroke Support Group This group meets
in two venues:
- Bath group meets Wednesdays at the Sulis Club, Claverton Down Road
- Paulton group meets Thursdays in the Turner Room at Paulton Hospital.
Bridgwater Speech After Stroke Club - The Heather Club
Meets on Fridays from
10:30am-2:30pm at the YMCA, Frian Avenue. Members take part in communication and physical exercises, and social activities.
We enjoy artwork and an exhibition of members' paintings was held in Bridgwater Library. We also enjoy several outings
each year and have a skittle match with the Yeovil Club.
Bristol - Brushstrokes Stroke Club Meets on Thursdays from 10am-12pm
at the Greenway Centre, Doncaster Road, Southmead. This art group uses painting to help the recovery and rehabilitation
of people who have had a stroke.
Burnham and Highbridge Stroke Club Meets on Tuesdays from 10am-2:30pm at
Morland's Hall, Morland Road. We enjoy playing games and socialising, as well as going on several trips out in the
summer. In 2003 the club received the Queen's Jubilee Award after being nominated by one member's carer. We were
invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace as a result.
Chard and Crewkerne After Stroke Group Meets at Chard Rugby Club
every Tuesday from 10:30am-2:30pm providing a light lunch for members and helpers. This group concentrates on improving the
communication skills of its members.
Cirencester Stroke Club Meets on Mondays from 9:30am-12pm at the Community
Room at Beech Grove Court. This friendly and social group enjoys remedial exercises, craftwork and games. Several
trips are also organised and, where possible, the main carer is also invited.
Gloucester Stroke Club Meets on the second Tuesday of the month
from 11am-1pm at Broom House, Baneberry Road, Robinswood. We try to arrange a speaker for each meeting, and also have quizzes
and bingo. Trips out are organised between meetings.
Lydney - Forest of Dean Stroke Club Meets fortnightly on Mondays at the
Springwater Centre in Lydney.
Stow on the Wold and District Stroke Club Meets every other Monday from
2:30-4:30pm at the Market Place, Bourton-on-the-Water. Club meetings include good discussions as a result of our
regular news quiz.
Stroud Stroke Club Meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month
from 2-4pm at Beeches Green Heath Centre.
Taunton - Clovermarle Stroke Club Meets on Tuesdays from 10am-3pm in
the Albemarle Assembly Rooms. We enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment, and a speech therapist recently joined
us.
Tewkesbury Stroke Club Meets on the second Wednesday of the month from
10am-12pm at The Day Centre, Staton Road. We are a small group who enjoy socialising. We also have speakers or a quiz,
plus the occasional trip out, usually for a meal.
Thornbury and District Stroke Club Meets on alternate Thursdays in
the Jubilee Hall, Alveston. We are a sociable group and celebrated our 26th birthday in July. We have weekly swimming
sessions and a small art group. From September to April we also have an indoor Bowls group.
Wellington Stroke Club Meets on Mondays from 10am-2:30pm at the Courtfield
Community Centre. We have a cooking and carpentry section plus our own specially adapted Minibus.
West Somerset Stroke Club - Minehead Meets on Wednesdays from 9am-2pm
in St John's Hall, North Road. The club recently bought a clavinova so that members could continue to enjoy their
music. Our craftwork is also popular, painting or making our own birthday cards. We go on a number of outings during
the year too.
Western Active Stroke Club - Weston-Super-Mare Meets on Tuesdays from 10am-12pm
at St Savior's Church Hall, Locking Road. We have an activities co-ordinator and enjoy listening to visiting speakers.
A number of outings are also organised.
Wincanton Stroke Club Meets every Wesdnesday from 10:30am-3:30pm at the
Wincanton Red Cross Centre. Meetings include a two course meal prepared by helpers. The group enjoy quizzes, games
and regular exercise sessions.
Yeovil Stroke Club Meets on Fridays from 10am-2pm at St Peter's Church Hall. We
start meetings with light physical exercise before the programmed event for the week. Members can enjoy a two course lunch,
which is prepared and served by our voluntary helpers. Several outings are also arranged during the year.
Non-affiliated clubs
There is also a non-affiliated group in Wells.
Dorset and Wiltshire
Amesbury CHSA Stroke Club Meets on Tuesday
afternoons at the Roman Catholic Church Hall. We have speakers every other week and club activities on other days.
We also enjoy several pub lunches each year plus a number of outings.
Bournemouth - Kingsley House Dysphasia Support Group Meets every Thursday from 2-4pm at Kingsley House,
Coronation Avenue. This is a Stroke Association stroke group that concentrates on helping people who have had a stroke
with communication problems.
Broadstone Stroke Club Meets on alternate Fridays from 2-4:30pm at the Conservative
Club, Tudor Road. The club celebrated its 21st birthday in October 2006.
Chippenham Stroke Club Meets on the second and last Wednesday of each
month from 2-4pm at Pewsham Community Hall. The club has a varied programme and people who have had a stroke and
their carers are welcome.
Dorchester Social Stroke Club Meets on Thursdays from 10am-12pm in the lounge
of the Magna Housing Development in Lubekke Way, Dorchester. This is a new club but it already has a full programme
of events. We also plan to have exercise, music and hand massage.
Parkstone Stroke Club Meets on Wednesdays from 2-4pm at St. Peter's
Centre, Chapel Road. We take part in games and quizzes, and enjoy a good chat.
Salisbury Stroke Club Meets on Wednesdays from 1:45-3:45pm at Milford
Manor Rest Home, Shady Bower, Laverstock.
Salisbury - The Onward Club Meets on alternate Thursdays from 10am-12pm in
the Communal Lounge of Hedley Davis Court in Cherry Orchard Lane. We have games and quizzes and do some artwork, and
there is always time for a chat. Several outings are arranged each year.
Shaftesbury - Blackmore Stroke Club Meets on Tuesdays from 10.30am-2pm at
the New Remembrance Hall, Charlton. We have speakers, do exercises, enjoy lunch and even take the opportunity
to have a manicure. At the moment the club has 25 members, who are supported by 10 helpers.
Swanage Stroke Club Meets on the third Saturday of each month at the
Swanage Day Centre. We have 40 members and in between meetings we go on a number of trips around the area. The Beach Hut
(No.22) on Swanage Sea Front becomes a daily meeting place for members during the summer months.
Swindon Stroke Support Group Meets on Thursdays from 7-9pm at Lower Stratton
Methodist Church Hall, Ermin Street, Stratton St Margaret. The social evenings involve a chat with varied games and bingo.
We have monthly local trips and some all day outings. An annual holiday is organised for everyone irrespective of disability
or needs. This is subsidised and those members who cannot attend are taken out for a meal instead. This
group won The Stroke Association's 'Life After Stroke Awards' club award for 2006.
Trowbridge and District Stroke Club Meets on Fridays from 1:30-4pm
at the Social Centre, The Halve, Trowbridge.
Verwood Stroke Club Meets on the morning of the fourth Wednesday of each month in the
Community Room of Lake Road Surgery.
Warminster White Horse Stroke Club Meets on Tuesdays from 1:30-3:30pm
in Warminster Library. This sociable group has a speaker on a different topic each week, and enjoys some trips out in
the summer.
Wroughton Social Stroke Club Meets at the Ellendune Centre and shares outings
with The Stroke Association's Communication Group.
Non-affiliated clubs There are clubs that are not affiliated to The Stroke
Association in Bournemouth, Bridport and Swindon (Pinehurst Centre).
